Salon Etiquette

unnamed

It is not everyday that a person can make money doing what they love and I know how lucky I am. I love my job and the people I meet. I just want people to understand salon etiquette from a stylists’ point of view and hopefully this will help answer any questions you may have when going to see your stylist 🙂

BE ON TIME: We book our clients based on how long a particular service will take and whether or not we can fit another client in during your processing time so when you are not on time, it can throw off the entire day and the clients after you from start to finish. We understand that some things are totally out of your control and it happens…but when it is a consistent lateness, you’re showing you don’t respect our time or the rest of the people who DO show up on time for their appointments. With that being said, if you are going to be late, please don’t wait until your appointment time to let us know this.

PAY FOR YOUR SERVICES AT THE TIME OF YOUR APPOINTMENT: I would like to say this should go without saying, but unfortunately it doesn’t, especially for stylists who work from home or independently. If you do not have the money on you or in your account to pay for your services, you need to reschedule your appointment. You cannot walk into a grocery store and ask to postdate a check so please don’t ask this of us. When you pay for your service, you are giving us a portion of our paycheck.

TIPPING: You should always be tipping your stylist, period. More than half of what we are paid, regardless of whether or not you pay cash, has to go toward; booth rental, replenishing color, products, scissor sharpening, electricity, water, towels, license renewal, continued education, foils, gloves, brushes, etc… anything you see in the salon that helps it to function daily and our tips are that little extra that we can actually keep for ourselves.

PICTURES ARE A POINT OF REFERENCE: I personally love pictures as a point of reference only…Sometimes it’s hard to get on the same page with a client as to what look they want to achieve with only discussing it, so a picture can be a great thing.. (Pinterest is a great place to get them!) However, there are some things to keep in mind while scrolling through colors and styles you want, they are just pictures..lighting is usually altered, they are not moving so you only get to see how the hair is sitting in that particular picture. Just be realistic when looking at pictures to show your stylist because they really can be an awesome tool!

TRUST YOUR STYLIST: We know your hair, we have experience.. so please, please trust our judgement! I don’t mean chop off all of your hair because we said you have the face for it… especially if you love your long hair lol but when we explain that going from dark to light in one day may not be possible, or your that your hair will pull very brassy, or the amount of work that will go in to maintaining a color/cut/highlight that you want could be a lot of maintenance, understand that we have the experience to know an outcome and just trust us 🙂 We only want what’s best for you and your hair!

DON’T ASK FOR DISCOUNTS: This is not only stylist related, I know makeup artists deal  with this as well. Having a business where I specialize in Bridal hair and makeup, I have gotten the email a time or two: “would you be willing to do it for such and such amount?” I will  never understand why anyone would think this is okay. Our prices are our prices and have been set accordingly based on our worth, our experience, our time…This is our art, our career! Think of what you make hourly at your job, now picture someone asking you if you could do your job for the next 2 hours for less than what you would normally get paid…you would tell them to take a flying leap! So, please don’t ask this of us. If you do not like the pricing your stylist/makeup artist has set, all you have to do is say ‘thank you I have decided to go elsewhere’ and move on, no hard feelings.

Talking with a lot of my stylist friends, I think we can almost all agree on the biggest issues we have dealt with over the years working, whether it be in a salon, at home, or freelance. This post is in no way meant to offend anyone, just for everyone to understand a few bullet points on salon etiquette. XOXO

Burt’s Bees Foundation

Screen Shot 2019-03-04 at 2.14.57 PM.png

Do you like the super artsy, fartsy picture of my foundation? I thought if I found some good lighting and put some flowers behind it, people would be ‘like ooohh, now that’s pretty’ ha ha ha!

I was at Meijer for groceries…and I went to check out their selection of Revlon BB creams since I knew I was almost out. First, let me explain what I love about BB creams and why you need one in your life…a BB cream is a multi-use product for your face. B.B. stands for blemish balm, or beauty balm and it is made to do a number of things. It can be used as sunscreen, a moisturizer, a light foundation, or a primer. You can use it in place of all of those things or use it for just one. If this sounds like you’ve heard it before, you may have read my blog post from (sigh…) 5 years ago… (insert forehead slap here) I have been slacking big time on my beauty blogging. You can read about my favorite BB cream in 2014 HERE if you’re curious.

ANYWAY… I personally love this stuff because it is light weight and never cakey and most of the time I prefer less coverage over too much coverage. So keeping this in mind, this is typically how I look for a foundation. When I saw that Burt’s Bees had a makeup section I got really excited and if I wasn’t in a hurry, would have text my SIL because I knew she would be all about it. Instead, I tested this color (Honey) on the back of my hand and fell in love with the consistency and realized it was a perfect match…THEN I got home and text her.

I have worn this everyday since, so it has been about 3-4 days. It claims to be a full coverage foundation but keep in mind, it is a mineral makeup. I don’t personally find it to be full coverage but more of a sheer to medium. It is buildable which is great for any blemishes you want to go back in a spot touch or just to add another layer for more coverage. I love how it looks once it’s on, it has a glowy look but can be more matte if you put a translucent powder over top. It lasts all day with no settling into my fine lines or (dare I say it) wrinkles!   **Note, I have very dry skin that I tend to over moisturize so this may not be the best foundation for over oily skin.

I highly recommend this foundation to anyone with dry/normal/combination skin. I am super excited to go back and try out some of the other products in this line!

Meet Sarah Selby (formerly Sheldon)…Sarah and I met in 2010 at a salon we worked at together in Hartland, Michigan. Her passion for hair and makeup was very apparent and her natural talent, drive to learn, and to better herself as a stylist and makeup artist is what made me want her as my right hand gal! We have always done hair and makeup for bridal parties (separately) but exclusively started working together in 2011.

Scrambling to find a stylist to help you with a bridal party is not fun! Not to mention, harder than you probably think! Not all stylists do special occasion hairstyles and it is even harder to find a stylist who also does makeup, and does it well! You have to trust them, believe in their work, they have to be able to do updos well and enjoy doing them—> which is a big deal because when you don’t enjoy what you’re doing, it can show in your work. They need to live close enough so the drive isn’t outrageous, among so many other things to be considered! Thank God we have Kourtney (my amazing stylist friend I met in cosmetology school) to be our third when we need her!

When I started Beauty by Maria as a freelance stylist/makeup artist, I knew I couldn’t do larger bridal parties alone and I knew I needed Sarah. When it comes to hairstyling and makeup applications, our styles are very similar which was an added bonus, making Sarah Selby the perfect co-stylist.

Anastasia Brow Definer

I just got this brow definer even though it has been out for about a year or so. When I saw it was coming out I was like “Oh My Gawd, I need this in my life”..but once it actually came out, I put it off because I use her brow wiz which is amazing and didn’t want to spend the money, but I thought maybe this would be quicker to use since it has a thicker, triangular tip.

I have only used it twice now, and I am thinking it’s not really making my brow filling process go any faster, which disappoints me. This, just like the brow wiz, is retractable and comes with a spooly for blending on the opposite end. They have many shades, my suggestion would be to go into Sephora and match your shade as close as possible before purchasing. They are both smudge-proof and long lasting (another reason to love Anastasia products).

The brow wiz has a much finer tip which emulates your real brows but it does take a little longer than using a powder brow filler or something with a thicker tip. I find that my right brow is much easier to do with this (I am right handed) but when I have to do my left..oh boy, what a challenge. I may need more time but I am thinking this may be a product better for my kit rather than personal use.

Marc Jacobs Highliner

IMG_0426.JPGBlack eye liner is the hardest liner to stay put all day. There are so many techniques to help “keep it in place” which work for a little bit but low and behold a few hours goes by and your black eyeliner, which was once perfectly placed on your water line and lid, are melting off your face and you start looking as if you’ve been punched (not cute). The one time I did fall in love with a liner, it was a gel liner (which I still keep in my kit because it’s amazing and more sanitary than a pencil) Maybelline Eyestudio gel pot, it comes with a brush that you have to use to apply it which just takes more work and time.. BUT this is not practical for everyday use, unless I wanted to spend even longer getting ready and I do not.

I received a Marc Jacobs mini gel eye crayon in the birthday present Sephora gives you and once I used it, I realized it was life changing. Not only does this stay in place all day, it doesn’t run or smear, it is just perfection. Even though it is amazing, keep in mind it will wear just like any other makeup and if you have it on for 12 hours, it will fade a bit, but thats to be expected. I would assume this stays on so well because it is a gel and not a typical pencil liner. There is something about gel that is really genius, it goes on smooth then doesn’t budge. So, hopefully the Marc Jacobs Highliner is still in the gift at Sephora so if it is your birthday month or if you missed your gift during your birthday month go in and get your gift! And if not, well you’ll just have to buy one but trust me, it is worth the splurge!

L’oreal Lumi Cushion

I am always looking for a foundation that works best for me for the season we are currently in. I am typically pretty dry so anything matte just doesn’t work for me. I end up looking cakey and flakey and the product settles into my fine lines and wrinkles…I know, I’m surprised about me having wrinkles just as much as you are 😉 So when I look for new foundations, I look for something hydrating, light weight, never full coverage and something that will stay on my face until the end of the day…WELL, I found it!!!…at the MAC store.

I bought MAC Face and Body foundation and fell in love. I use it in my professional kit and clients who want a lightweight, light coverage foundation (especially in the summer) love this stuff! I have been talking this foundation up for over a year now. When I meet people who have normal to dry skin, mature skin, teens, pretty much anyone who feels like they need foundation but doesn’t want to feel like they are wearing any, I tell them they need this product. Well just the other day I was watching one of my favorite makeup artists on YouTube and she was talking about L’oreal True Match Lumi Cushion (thats a mouthful!) and how great it was. The next time I went to Target I decided to grab one and see if it was actually great. Well, low and behold it is just as comparable if not better…..BETTER than the MAC Face and Body. I have been absolutely loving this and the best part is, it is cheaper.

The container is round and looks as though it may be a powder but it is 100% not a powder. It has the softest, round applicator that comes with it and all of the foundation, which is liquid, is in the sponge part. This blends SO perfectly, it covers up any imperfections I need covered (some need a little more help with concealer before applying the foundation) but it stays on all day and it never gets blotchy.  I have to say, this is a less expensive dupe for the MAC Face and Body if you’re in the market for a new foundation, you have to try this!

Becca Blush

I don’t even have much to say about this blush because it’s so great and how much can you really write about how great something is without sounding repetitive?! It has great pigmentation and it feels like silk, that is the best explanation I have for its texture lol a little goes a long way so even though its price point is on the high end, it will last you forever.  I bought mine at Sephora but you can also order from the Becca Cosmetics website.

DSCN1039

This is the swatch I did on the inside of my arm to show the color. The damselfly is a “bright coral” although I don’t think it is super bright, it is a very pretty coral color. If you are willing to spend a little more on a great blush that you will have for a long time, you have got to check this one out!

Benefit ‘they’re real!’ push up gel liner

push up gel liner

When I saw this product was coming out, I knew I had to try it. I am in love with gel liners so I thought this was a great idea. I finally got it as a sample when I made a Sephora purchase recently and tested it out. I had put it on, on a sort of rainy day that was a little hot and muggy (which is the best test!) I even put it on BEFORE my massage. I wanted to see how it held up.

First off, the tip on this is made to help you do the winged look more easily than buying a pot of gel liner and using an eyeliner brush to apply it. I am not sure if I am just used to using the pot and brush to apply, but I didn’t think the tip of the eyeliner was all that great. I found it to be too flexible and wobbly and couldn’t get a very straight line. I went back over it as steady as I could because I wanted to see how this held up.

I went and got my massage <— click here, she’s an amazing massage therapist. My final thoughts on this product, after the “Maria test” is, I may need more practice using that particular tip to apply it, but over all, the actual product is made well and lasts. It is very black, very smooth, and stays on. I would say it is worth the money to buy it!

Maybelline Volum’Express Mascara Review

I have the hardest time when it comes to loving mascara that isn’t Cover Girl. I use the Cover Girl clump crusher in very black, waterproof and I have yet to find something better! It is the perfect waterproof formula, the perfect color, and the perfect wand.

mascara cg

I decided to try the Maybelline Volum’Express mascara with the “revolutionary gel-mousse formula” and “flexor-brush”.

mascara

As usual, I have wasted my money trying something that will never compete with my life love, Cover Girl. The actual waterproof formula seems to be pretty good, but if you wear a lot of mascara like I do, the brush on this is the hardest thing to use for someone who wears more than 1 coat of mascara 😦 Because of the flexor-brush, you can’t use any pressure to pack on the layers, so it is very hard to coat your eyelashes. I was pretty bummed out because I just want to find something else that I love!

So, instead of this being a total waste, I will just use my Cover Girl wand in the Maybelline bottle.

Tarte Cheek Stain

tarte blog

My amazing friend Kelly, who is a makeup artist as well, told me to get these awhile back. I never ended up getting them because I was too afraid of a cheek stain. In my mind, I envisioned putting it on my cheek and it coming out as if I just used a tube of lipstick (which, if you can’t envision, just know, in my mind, it wasn’t pretty).

Well, low and behold, these are just as amazing as she said they were and I will tell you why. First off, they smell good….lol that might not matter to you, but I have a sensitive nose and if a makeup has a weird smell, I wouldn’t be able to keep it on my face all day. Second, the color has great pigment but the finish is sheer which makes this great for a couple reasons: you want a cheek color to stay on all day and not move around or come off when you itch your cheek, and on most days, you don’t want an intense cheek. These look natural and blend very easily.

The best thing about a cheek stain is you can use the stain first and a blush second. Start by putting the stain on the apples of your cheeks, blending up toward your temples. You can use your fingers, a brush, or a beauty blender. Then take a little bit of your blush over top of the stain and BAM, your blush looks amazing and will last all day 🙂
