Weddings by Maria & Sarah

Meet Sarah Selby (formerly Sheldon)…Sarah and I met in 2010 at a salon we worked at together in Hartland, Michigan. Her passion for hair and makeup was very apparent and her natural talent, drive to learn, and to better herself as a stylist and makeup artist is what made me want her as my right hand gal! We have always done hair and makeup for bridal parties (separately) but exclusively started working together in 2011.

Scrambling to find a stylist to help you with a bridal party is not fun! Not to mention, harder than you probably think! Not all stylists do special occasion hairstyles and it is even harder to find a stylist who also does makeup, and does it well! You have to trust them, believe in their work, they have to be able to do updos well and enjoy doing them—> which is a big deal because when you don’t enjoy what you’re doing, it can show in your work. They need to live close enough so the drive isn’t outrageous, among so many other things to be considered! Thank God we have Kourtney (my amazing stylist friend I met in cosmetology school) to be our third when we need her!

When I started Beauty by Maria as a freelance stylist/makeup artist, I knew I couldn’t do larger bridal parties alone and I knew I needed Sarah. When it comes to hairstyling and makeup applications, our styles are very similar which was an added bonus, making Sarah Selby the perfect co-stylist.

As a business owner, my name is on the line and who I have working beside me that day represents me and my business. I am loud, and sarcastic, and honest..I know when to take it down a notch and I know how to be professional because I take my career seriously. I have a passion and I absolutely LOVE what I do and my name and my work mean everything to me!

We would love to be a part of your special day, let us enhance your natural beauty in the comfort of your own home, hotel, venue, or wherever you will be on the day of your wedding! Whether you hire Beauty by Maria or Hair by Sarah Selby, you will more than likely have the both of us there to get your bridal party ready for your big day! For more info check out Beauty by Maria

Anastasia Brow Definer

I just got this brow definer even though it has been out for about a year or so. When I saw it was coming out I was like “Oh My Gawd, I need this in my life”..but once it actually came out, I put it off because I use her brow wiz which is amazing and didn’t want to spend the money, but I thought maybe this would be quicker to use since it has a thicker, triangular tip.

I have only used it twice now, and I am thinking it’s not really making my brow filling process go any faster, which disappoints me. This, just like the brow wiz, is retractable and comes with a spooly for blending on the opposite end. They have many shades, my suggestion would be to go into Sephora and match your shade as close as possible before purchasing. They are both smudge-proof and long lasting (another reason to love Anastasia products).

The brow wiz has a much finer tip which emulates your real brows but it does take a little longer than using a powder brow filler or something with a thicker tip. I find that my right brow is much easier to do with this (I am right handed) but when I have to do my left..oh boy, what a challenge. I may need more time but I am thinking this may be a product better for my kit rather than personal use.

My Current Skincare Routine

Man oh man, I haven’t written about my skincare routine in almost 2 years! I really need to be blogging more…anyway…If you read my dry skin routine than you know I have very dry skin. I have tried other things since January of 2015 but just recently started this routine. I went to Sephora and the woman asked me how my diet was……um…I just laughed. She suggested eating more fish and nuts to keep my skin hydrated and soft or whatever but that probably won’t happen…so, just sell me face wash for goodness sake! This was her suggestion, the Murad Renewing Cleansing Cream, great for dry skin and it says it renews the skin’s youthful glow….I don’t see youthful skin just yet but I am still hopeful.

So, the first step in my routine is to cleanse morning and night (face and neck) which is how often you should be washing your face—please don’t sleep in your makeup, the thought of it makes me cringe. I don’t use more than a pea size and it’s just enough! This stuff takes off all of your eye makeup too!

The second step is to spray my face with Caudalie Beauty Elixer (it’s fancy) I did not go to Paris to purchase this but I did go to Sephora, she talked me into buying this but halfway through the bottle, I am thinking it isn’t actually doing anything for my skin. It claims to help with dullness, uneven texture, shrink pores, and help with dryness. Once this is gone, I won’t purchase it again but everything is an experience, right?! The good news about this stuff is that it can also be used as a foundation setting spray, apply foundation, spray face, then apply your powder.

Next, I use my homemade roller with the following ingredients: Lavender-great for all skin types. Known for its relaxing and calming properties and great for soothing mild skin irritations. Frankincense-helps to slow the signs of aging and promotes youthful skin. Pure Argan Oil-Prevents and treats sunburn, scars and heals damaged skin. Locks in moisture, and has anti-aging and anti-inflammatory properties. I ordered these amber glass roll on bottles from Amazon and they work great! This particular Argan oil is Josie Maran, she makes a Light version as well so if you aren’t as dry as I am, that may be a better option.

These 3 oils have so many other benefits and uses, but after doing a lot of research, the reasons listed above are why I chose to make this part of my skincare routine🙂 I am not a doctor or dermatologist so do your own research on oils and what will work best for your skin type! (I use DoTerra oils as well) The only reason I even started researching  the use of Frankincense is because a friend gave me a bottle of it, which was actually pretty generous of her because it isn’t cheap!

This is the 3rd step, I just roll this mixture all over my face and rub it in and down my neck as well. This keeps me pretty well hydrated and makes my skin feel and smell so good and smooth!

This is my final step ONLY if I am still feeling dry…This Murad Hydro-Dynamic Ultimate Moisture was just a sample size from Sephora but the woman who told me I need to eat fish and nuts said it should last a month. I don’t have to use much, a little goes a long way.

Marc Jacobs Highliner

IMG_0426.JPGBlack eye liner is the hardest liner to stay put all day. There are so many techniques to help “keep it in place” which work for a little bit but low and behold a few hours goes by and your black eyeliner, which was once perfectly placed on your water line and lid, are melting off your face and you start looking as if you’ve been punched (not cute). The one time I did fall in love with a liner, it was a gel liner (which I still keep in my kit because it’s amazing and more sanitary than a pencil) Maybelline Eyestudio gel pot, it comes with a brush that you have to use to apply it which just takes more work and time.. BUT this is not practical for everyday use, unless I wanted to spend even longer getting ready and I do not.

I received a Marc Jacobs mini gel eye crayon in the birthday present Sephora gives you and once I used it, I realized it was life changing. Not only does this stay in place all day, it doesn’t run or smear, it is just perfection. Even though it is amazing, keep in mind it will wear just like any other makeup and if you have it on for 12 hours, it will fade a bit, but thats to be expected. I would assume this stays on so well because it is a gel and not a typical pencil liner. There is something about gel that is really genius, it goes on smooth then doesn’t budge. So, hopefully the Marc Jacobs Highliner is still in the gift at Sephora so if it is your birthday month or if you missed your gift during your birthday month go in and get your gift! And if not, well you’ll just have to buy one but trust me, it is worth the splurge!

L’oreal Lumi Cushion

I am always looking for a foundation that works best for me for the season we are currently in. I am typically pretty dry so anything matte just doesn’t work for me. I end up looking cakey and flakey and the product settles into my fine lines and wrinkles…I know, I’m surprised about me having wrinkles just as much as you are😉 So when I look for new foundations, I look for something hydrating, light weight, never full coverage and something that will stay on my face until the end of the day…WELL, I found it!!!…at the MAC store.

I bought MAC Face and Body foundation and fell in love. I use it in my professional kit and clients who want a lightweight, light coverage foundation (especially in the summer) love this stuff! I have been talking this foundation up for over a year now. When I meet people who have normal to dry skin, mature skin, teens, pretty much anyone who feels like they need foundation but doesn’t want to feel like they are wearing any, I tell them they need this product. Well just the other day I was watching one of my favorite makeup artists on YouTube and she was talking about L’oreal True Match Lumi Cushion (thats a mouthful!) and how great it was. The next time I went to Target I decided to grab one and see if it was actually great. Well, low and behold it is just as comparable if not better…..BETTER than the MAC Face and Body. I have been absolutely loving this and the best part is, it is cheaper.

The container is round and looks as though it may be a powder but it is 100% not a powder. It has the softest, round applicator that comes with it and all of the foundation, which is liquid, is in the sponge part. This blends SO perfectly, it covers up any imperfections I need covered (some need a little more help with concealer before applying the foundation) but it stays on all day and it never gets blotchy.  I have to say, this is a less expensive dupe for the MAC Face and Body if you’re in the market for a new foundation, you have to try this!

My dry skin routine…

Well, it’s been awhile….but let’s pretend it hasn’t and we will move forward🙂 I want to talk about dry skin. I have terrible dry skin especially in the winter and it drives me crazy. It is so hard to get foundation or concealer to look decent when you have dry, flaking skin on your face so I want to talk about what I do to avoid this. You don’t have to use all of these products but this is my face washing and moisturizing routine.

First, I wash my face with Origins clean energy cleansing oil Origins Clean Energy Cleansing Oil  I usually use about 2 pumps and cover my whole face and neck ensuring I have removed all of my makeup. I then add water and you will notice it goes on as an oil and then slightly suds up once water is added.

After drying my face off, I use Origins anti-aging serum all over my face and neck.f7574d367b2d5b83f14c353968ec8ba0

I then apply Origins eye doctor under eye moisturizer be636192ae16a13cf207ec1249b96c49

So, while at Origins (because I love their products, as you can tell) the sales associate gave me their “most hydrating” face moisturizer which is this—-> Origins-Anti_Age-Make_A_Difference_Plus_Ultra_Rich_Rejuvenating_Cream the make a difference plus….BUT this does not hydrate my skin as much as it should so sometimes I don’t even use this during the day, I will before bed but with how dry I am right now,

I skip this one and go right to coconut oil Natures-Way-Organic-Coconut-Oil-033674156735 this is the one I use for my face and my whole body.  You can get it at Kroger in the natural section. This would be the first step you would take after washing your face, if you skip the anti-aging serum, under eye moisturizer and the face moisturizer…most people could probably just do the coconut oil and be good to go but of course, not me…I am thinking the fact that we have a wood burner doesn’t help my dry skin problem:-/

Once the coconut oil has soaked into my skin, there are times (not everyday) that by the time I get to my makeup I need more moisture. Yes, I know….It is out of control how much I put on my face but you need to take care of your skin!! So I use Embryolisse Lait-Creme concentre embryolisse_lait_creme(it’s French) so fancy…lol not really but it’s a great product that I keep in my kit for anyone who has dry skin before I do their makeup. This can also be mixed with foundations or concealers if they are too thick and need to be sheered out a bit.

Once I am entirely hydrated, I apply my hydrating foundation LOL..yes more hydration. So, right now I use Mac face and body foundation MAC Face and Body Foundation C4 (1) but I am in the process of trying other medium coverage, hydrating foundations. I love this product for a more sheer coverage and keeps the moisture in my skin, but I want something with a little more coverage so once I find “the one” I will blog about it. This is a great product especially for summer when you have a nice little glow and nothing to really cover up on your face, apply with a damp beauty blender or foundation brush.

Once my foundation is applied I use Benefit’s erase paste concealer thfor my under eye dark circles…this is another hydrating product that won’t dry and crack under your eyes. Be sure to set this with a little bit of mineral powder so it doesn’t settle into fine lines throughout the day. Same goes for any areas you may get oily in later in the day. I do get a little oily in my t-zone but not until later so I very lightly set my under eye area and my forehead and nose. Sometimes I won’t set anything but this all depends on your skin.

I know this is a lot but this is what I personally do with how dry my skin is. This routine changes so much once summer hits though!

Becca Blush

I don’t even have much to say about this blush because it’s so great and how much can you really write about how great something is without sounding repetitive?! It has great pigmentation and it feels like silk, that is the best explanation I have for its texture lol a little goes a long way so even though its price point is on the high end, it will last you forever.  I bought mine at Sephora but you can also order from the Becca Cosmetics website.

This is the swatch I did on the inside of my arm to show the color. The damselfly is a “bright coral” although I don’t think it is super bright, it is a very pretty coral color. If you are willing to spend a little more on a great blush that you will have for a long time, you have got to check this one out!
